Lake Mungo National Park, part of the Willandra Lakes World Heritage Area is situated approximately 128km north  of Balranald & 180km south east of Menindee in the south west corner of New South Wales.  Lake Mungo was once an inland fresh water lake 135 square kms in area & about 10 meters deep before it dried up some 14,000 years ago.  It has some of the oldest fossils known to man & the area is the oldest known human occupation in Australia.(40,000 years ago).  In the early 1800's the lake was  a sheep station on which some 50,000 sheep grazed. It was declared a National Park in 1979.  The Park has good camping facilities on both west & east sides of the lake & accomodation is available at the Visitors Centre where the old shearer's quarters are situated. (Prior booking essential)   The trip around the lake is some 57kms long.  We visited Lake Mungo in October 2003 on our return trip home from Cape York.
